Marimo Moss Ball (IN-STORE PURCHASE ONLY)
**NOT SOLD OUT | IN-STORE PURCHASE ONLY**
Marimo Moss Balls are one of my favourite, equally bizarre and beautiful plant
discoveries yet!
Marimo, a Japanese word which literally translates to “seaweed ball” is a rare form
of spherical Aegagropila algae that grows in cold water with low lighting native to
Lake Akan in Japan.
They are adorable, alive, well behaved, easy maintenance and grow at a snail’s pace of just 5mm per year and are known to live over 100+ years! The Worlds largest recorded Moss Ball is 95cm - which at their growth -rate is over 200 years old.
Another reason to love Marimo moss balls is beautiful lore that surround these
mysterious aquatics. Legend tells of two lovers who desired nothing more than to
be together. When their love was forbidden, they fell into the water, and their
hearts became Marimo balls.
Marimo are said to bring good luck and your heart’s desire to both the giver and
receiver.
So how do you take care of them? It's pretty simple really...
- Change their water once a week.
- Give them a gentle squeeze under running water and a roll around in your palms to help maintain the shape.
- Give them the occasional stir to replicate the currents.
- Keep them in indirect light.
- On hot days give them a "fridge holiday" to keep them cool.
- The "fridge holiday" also works on making them greener - just pop them in for a couple of days with the odd stir
